Preposiciones de lugar: at, on e in

Usamos at, on e in para indicar dónde está alguien o algo. Compara estos ejemplos:

  • The children are in the classroom.
  • There is a picture on the wall.
  • I'll meet you at the bus stop.

In = dentro

  • habitaciones y edificios: in the kitchen, in the bookshop
  • ciudades, países y regiones: in the town, in Italy, in the south of England
  • grandes espacios naturales: swimming in the sea, in the river, dark clouds in the sky
  • recipientes y espacios cerrados: in the bag, the eggs in the fridge

On = sobre una superficie

  • superficies: a spider on the wall, on the ceiling, on the floor, sitting on the grass, a book on the table
  • niveles y plataformas: on the balcony, on the third floor, on the roof
  • medios de transporte: on the bus, on the train, on a bike, on a plane

Atención: Con vehículos pequeños y privados usamos in:

  • in a car, in a taxi

  • puntos y lugares de encuentro: at the bus stop, at the traffic lights, at the station, at the end of the road
  • eventos y actividades: at the party, to meet friends at the concert, at the tennis match
  • la casa de alguien o un lugar de trabajo: at Mike's, at the doctor's
  • expresiones fijas sin artículo: at home, at work, at university

Expresiones fijas

  • in bed, in hospital (inglés británico), in prison
  • in the picture / in the photograph, in the newspaper
  • in the world, the best player in the world
  • on the way home, at the top / at the bottom of the page
