Preposiciones de tiempo: at, on e in

Usamos at, on e in para decir cuándo ocurre algo.

  • at → un momento concreto

At = un momento concreto

Usamos at con horas exactas y momentos concretos.

  • The bus leaves at 10 o'clock.
    Come at 5:30.
  • She isn't here at the moment.
    Owls hunt at night.
  • Expresiones frecuentes: at noon, at midnight, at sunrise, at bedtime, at Christmas

Usamos on con días, fechas y festividades concretas.

  • We play football on Saturdays.
I was born on 4 March.
  • We meet on New Year's Day.
I got a present on my birthday.
  • Día + parte del día:
    See you on Friday night.
The train arrives on Monday morning.

Si mencionamos un día concreto, usamos on, aunque añadamos una parte del día: on Monday morning, no in Monday morning.

in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening
  • Meses, estaciones y años:
in July, in winter, in 2025
  • Períodos largos:
in the past, in the future, in the 1990s

Excepciones importantes

No usamos ninguna preposición delante de: this, last, next y every.

  • I saw him last week. (no in last week)
  • Are you working this evening?
  • We meet every Monday.
  • See you next year.

The train leaves in ten minutes.
= El tren sale dentro de diez minutos.
  • At night = la noche en general:
I don't like driving at night.
  • In the night = durante una noche concreta:
A noise woke me up in the night.
  • At the beginning/end of = al principio o al final de un evento:
There is a test at the beginning of the lesson.
  • In the beginning = al principio, al comienzo
In the end = al final, finalmente
It was difficult in the beginning.
In the end, we chose Spain.
  • At the weekend = inglés británico
On the weekend = inglés americano

Resumen

  • at → hora exacta / momento concreto
    at 7 o'clock, at midnight
  • on → día / fecha
    on Monday, on 5 June
  • in → período más largo
in July, in 2025, in winter
