Números ordinales
Los números ordinales (first, second, third) indican la posición o el orden de algo. También se usan con fechas, siglos y fracciones.
- He lives on the third floor. (posición/orden)
= Vive en el tercer piso. - It was my first accident.
= Fue mi primer accidente. - Jim was fifth in the competition.
= Jim quedó quinto en la competición. - It's the eleventh of January. / It's January 11th. (fecha)
= Es el once de enero. - There was a lot of poverty during the nineteenth century. (siglos)
= Hubo mucha pobreza durante el siglo XIX (diecinueve). - Use two thirds of a cup of milk. (fracciones)
= Usa dos tercios de una taza de leche.
Formación de los números ordinales
Los tres primeros tienen formas irregulares:
- one → first (1st) = primero
- two → second (2nd) = segundo
- three → third (3rd) = tercero
La mayoría de los números ordinales se forman añadiendo -th al número cardinal (cardinal number).
- four → fourth = cuarto
- seven → seventh = séptimo
- ten → tenth = décimo
- eleven → eleventh = undécimo
- thirteen → thirteenth = decimotercero
- nineteen → nineteenth = decimonoveno
- a hundred → hundredth = centésimo
- a thousand → thousandth = milésimo
Algunos tienen una ortografía irregular:

En los números compuestos mayores de veinte, solo cambia la última parte a forma ordinal.
- 21 → twenty-first (21st)
= vigésimo primero - 32 → thirty-second (32nd)
= trigésimo segundo - 43 → forty-third (43rd)
= cuadragésimo tercero - 45 → forty-fifth (45th)
= cuadragésimo quinto - 250 → two hundred and fiftieth (250th)
= doscientos cincuenta
Ojo: Los números 11, 12 y 13 siempre terminan en -th:
- 11th = eleventh = undécimo
- 12th = twelfth = duodécimo
- 13th = thirteenth = decimotercero
