¿There o it?

En inglés, casi todas las oraciones necesitan un sujeto. A veces no hay ninguna persona o cosa concreta que realice la acción, así que se usa it o there como sujeto.

There is/are – algo existe

Usamos there is/are para decir que algo existe o está presente en algún lugar. La cosa de la que hablamos aparece después de is/are.

Atención: En there is/are, there no significa allí o ahí. Solo sirve para decir que hay algo.

  • There is a dictionary on the table.
(Hay un diccionario sobre la mesa.)
  • There are twelve months in a year.
(Hay doce meses en un año.)
  • Is there a cinema in this town?
(¿Hay un cine en esta ciudad?)
  • There is a lot of snow in winter.
    (En invierno hay mucha nieve.)
  • How much milk is there in the jug?
(¿Cuánta leche hay en la jarra?)

It – una situación general

Usamos it para hablar del tiempo, el tiempo atmosférico, la distancia, las fechas o para referirnos a algo que ya se ha mencionado o que ya es conocido.

  • It is five o'clock. (time)
    (Son las cinco.)
  • It snows a lot in winter. (weather)
    (Nieva mucho en invierno.)
  • How far is it from Houston to Dallas? (distance)
(¿A qué distancia está Houston de Dallas?)
  • It is Mike's birthday today. (date)
(Hoy es el cumpleaños de Mike.)
  • I don't like this cake. It is too sweet. (known thing)
(No me gusta este pastel. Está demasiado dulce.)

    (Hay un problema.)
  • It + situación → hora, tiempo atmosférico, distancia, fecha, opinión o algo conocido
    It is cold.
