Irregular spelling

Why does "said" not rhyme with "maid" — and why does "once" have a C in it at all?

English contains many words that do not follow regular spelling rules. These are called irregular words or sight words. You often cannot sound them out letter by letter — you have to recognise them instantly.

The important thing: these words are very common, so learning them has a big impact on reading and writing.

What are sight words?

Sight words are high-frequency words that appear very often in texts.

Examples:
the, said, have, one, once, two, come, some, does, done, give, love, people, because

Many of these words have unusual spellings that do not match their pronunciation.

Why irregular words exist

English spelling developed over time, and pronunciation changed while spelling often stayed the same.

This is why:

said does not sound like maid
once contains a silent letter

These are not random — they are historical patterns.

Common irregular patterns

-ould group (silent L):
could, would, should

-ough group (many sounds):
though, through, rough, cough, thought

O sounding like short U:
come, some, love, done, money, honey

These patterns repeat across many words.

Irregular past tense verbs

Many common verbs do not use -ed in the past:

go → went, say → said, see → saw, take → took, make → made

These must be learned as forms, not built by rule.

How to learn irregular words

Effective strategies:

1. Look – cover – write – check
Study the word, hide it, write it, then check.

2. Group patterns
Learn words in families (could, would, should).

3. Read regularly
Seeing words in context helps fix them in memory.

4. Say and spell together
Link pronunciation and spelling actively.

How to deal with unknown words

If a word does not follow expected patterns:

• Do not guess blindly
• Try recognising parts of it
• Memorise it as a whole if needed

Some words must simply be learned individually.

Key idea

English is not perfectly regular, but it is not random.

Irregular words follow patterns — and the most common ones are worth mastering early.
