Idioms

An idiom is a fixed expression whose meaning is often different from the literal meaning of its individual words. Idioms are very common in everyday English and make speech more natural and expressive.

Look at the examples:

  • I'm feeling under the weather. = I'm feeling unwell.
  • That test was a piece of cake. = It was very easy.
  • She told me to keep an eye on the children. = watch them carefully.
  • We need to leave in no time. = very soon / very quickly.

The meaning of an idiom cannot always be guessed from the individual words, so learn the whole expression together with its meaning and an example.
