Used To, Be Used To, Get Used To

These three expressions look similar, but they describe three different situations. Look at the examples:

  • I used to wake up at 6 every day when I was a student.
→ This was my habit in the past, but I do not do it now.
  • I am used to waking up at 6 every day because of my job.
→ Waking up at 6 is normal for me now.
  • I am getting used to waking up at 6 in my new job.
→ It is still a change, but it is becoming easier.

Used to + basic verb → past habit or situation

  • She didn't use to like tomatoes.

Be used to + noun / verb-ing → something is familiar or normal

→ Is waking up at five normal for you?
